James Reynolds Map and Chart Prints

James Reynolds & Sons was a Victorian-era London map publisher that produced some of the finest cartographic work of the 19th century — maps that combined genuine geographical precision with remarkable decorative quality. The coloured county maps, city plans, and illustrated maps produced by Reynolds are among the most collectible vintage maps, and many examples in original hand-coloured editions command significant prices at auction.

Reynolds Map Characteristics

James Reynolds maps are distinguished by several qualities that set them apart from the mass of Victorian cartography:

  • Rich hand colouring — the borders, county boundaries, and decorative elements of Reynolds maps were coloured by hand by skilled colourists, giving them a warmth and variation that mechanical colour printing cannot replicate.
  • Cartographic detail — Reynolds maps include extraordinary levels of geographical and topographical detail, reflecting the genuine scientific ambition of Victorian cartography.
  • Decorative elements — borders, vignettes, and illustrative elements give Reynolds maps a decorative quality that pure cartographic publications rarely achieve.

The Reynolds collection at Ink & Drop covers English counties, British Isles maps, European country maps, and world maps from the Reynolds publishing catalogue. These are genuine historical documents as well as beautiful decorative objects.

Who was James Reynolds?

James Reynolds & Sons was a Victorian-era London map and atlas publisher active primarily from the 1840s to the 1880s. They produced county maps, city plans, and world maps that combined cartographic precision with high decorative quality. Their hand-coloured county maps of England are among the most collectible Victorian maps, and original editions appear regularly at auction.

What maps are available from James Reynolds?

The collection includes English county maps, British Isles maps, European country and regional maps, and world maps from the Reynolds publishing catalogue. All are reproductions of the original 19th century plates, produced to the highest quality on 230gsm matte art paper.

What rooms suit vintage map prints?

Vintage map prints work in studies, home offices, living rooms, and hallways — spaces associated with knowledge, travel, and history. A large James Reynolds county or county map is particularly effective in a traditional or country interior. In contemporary interiors, the warm antique tones of a Reynolds map create an interesting contrast with modern furnishings.
