Vintage Music Concert Prints

Concert poster art is one of the most distinctive graphic art traditions of the 20th century. From the psychedelic lettering and swirling colour of the San Francisco ballroom posters of the 1960s to the cut-and-paste aggression of punk flyers, to the bold illustrative style of 1980s and 1990s rock concert posters — each era developed its own graphic language for announcing live music.

Concert Poster Traditions

• Psychedelic 1960s poster art — the Fillmore and Avalon Ballroom poster tradition from San Francisco: swirling Art Nouveau-influenced lettering, electric colour palettes, and the visual language of the counter-culture. Artists including Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin.
• Punk and post-punk flyer design — the deliberately rough, xerox-culture aesthetic of 1970s and 1980s punk concert flyers. Cut-and-paste typography, photocopied imagery, aggressive graphic design.
• Arena and stadium rock poster art — the professional, illustrative poster tradition of 1970s and 1980s arena rock, including festival posters and tour promotional art.
• Indie and alternative concert posters — the screen-print poster revival of the 1990s and 2000s: hand-drawn illustration, limited edition screen printing, and the craft tradition of poster art applied to indie and alternative music.
