Vintage Travel Posters

Vintage travel posters capture the golden age of leisure travel — the bold, optimistic poster art of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, when rail, ocean liner, and early aviation companies commissioned the finest illustrators of the day to sell the world as an irresistible destination. This collection brings together the finest examples of that tradition, printed to museum quality.

Vintage Travel Posters

The golden age of travel poster art — roughly 1920 to 1960 — produced some of the most beautiful graphic design ever made. Railway companies, shipping lines, airlines, and tourism boards commissioned the finest commercial artists of the day to produce posters that sold travel as adventure, romance, and sophistication.

The Travel Poster Tradition

Vintage travel posters are characterised by bold, flat colour printing (a result of early lithographic techniques); simplified, geometric compositions; dramatic perspective and scale; and an unfailing optimism about the destinations they depicted. The artists who produced them — many now forgotten, some celebrated — were among the finest commercial illustrators of the 20th century.

The style sits between Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and early Modernism, borrowing from all three and creating something distinctly its own.

Destinations in This Collection

The collection covers destinations worldwide — British seaside resorts in the LNER and GWR railway poster tradition; European cities and ski resorts in the Swiss and French tourism poster style; American national parks and cities; tropical destinations that sold the glamour of early air travel; and oceanic voyages on the great shipping lines.

Why Vintage Travel Posters Work in Interiors

Travel posters have an inherent narrative quality — they tell a story and create a sense of longing that few other art forms do. They suit any room that benefits from a sense of escape, adventure, or cosmopolitan character. In hallways, dining rooms, and home bars, they create instant atmosphere and are consistently among the most commented-on pieces in any home.

Sizes and Framing

Vintage travel posters are available in seven sizes from 21x30cm to 100x150cm, framed or unframed. Many travel poster compositions are designed for large format — 70x100cm and above truly captures the bold, billboard quality of the originals.

What makes a poster "vintage travel"?

Vintage travel posters are typically from the 1920s to 1960s golden age of commercial travel illustration — produced by railway companies, airlines, shipping lines, and tourism boards to promote destinations and routes. They are characterised by bold flat colour, Art Deco or Modernist design sensibility, dramatic compositions, and an optimistic, aspirational quality. Some are reproductions of original archived posters; others are new works created in the vintage style.

What destinations are available?

The collection covers a wide range of destinations — British seaside and countryside (in the classic railway poster tradition), European cities (Paris, Rome, Venice, the Alps), American national parks and cities, tropical destinations, and some global locations. The British railway poster tradition (LNER, GWR, LMS) is particularly well represented.

What size works best for vintage travel posters?

Travel poster compositions are typically designed for large format — they were originally billboard-scale, after all. For maximum impact, 70x100cm or 100x150cm captures the boldness of the original. For a dining room feature or hallway statement, 50x70cm works well. Smaller sizes (30x40cm or 40x50cm) are excellent for gallery wall inclusions alongside other prints.
