Dining Room Prints

Dining rooms suit bold, atmospheric, and conversation-starting art more than any other room in the house. Large botanical prints, abstract pieces with rich colour, vintage food and drink illustration, and statement prints all work well. The dining room is a social space — art here should have presence and reward attention, rather than quietly blending into the background.

Dining rooms are one of the rooms where a single large print — 70x100cm or 100x150cm — makes the strongest impact. A print that feels too big in a bedroom often feels exactly right above a dining room sideboard. If you prefer a gallery wall, three to five prints at 40x50cm or 50x70cm gives a more relaxed, collected feel across the main dining wall.

Art doesn't need to match furniture exactly, but it should feel cohesive with the room's palette. Pick up one or two colours from your dining chairs, table, or soft furnishings in the print. Contrast often works better than perfect matching — a bold botanical print against a pale wall with natural wood furniture creates more atmosphere than art in identical tones to everything else.

The wall most visible to seated guests — the wall a guest faces across the table, or the wall at the end of the room — is the prime position. Above a sideboard or console table is the most reliable combination: the furniture grounds the art and the two pieces work together as a focal point. Hang the centre of the print at 145–150cm from the floor, or at a height that feels naturally visible when seated.

In an open-plan kitchen-diner, coordinating the art across both areas creates visual flow. This doesn't mean identical prints — choose pieces from the same collection or with a shared colour palette. Botanical prints work well across both spaces. In separate rooms, there's more freedom to treat them independently — the dining room can go bolder and more formal, while the kitchen carries something more relaxed.
