John James Audubon

John James Audubon was an American ornithologist and illustrator. He came to America in 1803 and dedicated himself to his passion – namely the study and documentation of birds. He is best known for his main work ‘The Birds of America’, a collection of 435 hand-shaded drawings of American birds now available in print.

The publisher John James Audubon's most popular creation was The Birds of America, which is considered the world's most costly printed book. Around 200 copies of The Birds of America, which had 435 illustrations on pages measuring 99cm x 66cm, were printed by John James. Between 1827 and 1838, four volumes of engravings were published, each of which was handpainted in watercolour by the author himself. William MacGillivray's Ornithological Biographies accompanied each image.
