Emile-Alain Séguys

Emile-Alain Séguy (1877–1951) occupies a unique position in the history of decorative art — he was simultaneously a scientific illustrator, a fabric and wallpaper designer, and a publisher of extraordinary luxury colour books that pushed the pochoir printing technique to its limits. His insect and butterfly plates are his most celebrated work.

The Séguy Aesthetic

Séguy worked in the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, drawing on both movements' strengths. His insect illustration has the naturalistic observation of the former and the geometric precision of the latter. The result is plates that are scientifically accurate enough to identify species and decoratively inventive enough to use as fabric designs — which many of them became.

The butterfly and moth plates from his Papillons (1925) and Insectes (1929) publications are his most sought-after works — extraordinary pochoir-printed sheets in which each specimen is rendered in vibrant, jewel-like colours against backgrounds of Art Deco decorative complexity.

Pochoir Printing

Pochoir (stencil-based colour printing) was the luxury printing technique of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods — used for the finest fashion illustration and decorative publications because it could achieve colour saturation and precision that lithography could not match. Séguy's Papillons is widely considered one of the finest examples of pochoir printing ever produced.

Why Séguy Prints Work in Interiors

Séguy prints are among the most versatile in the vintage illustration collection — they suit both traditional and contemporary interiors because the combination of natural subject matter with Art Deco geometric arrangement has a timeless visual logic. The jewel-like colours work particularly well in spaces that want rich, saturated colour without abstract art.

Sizes and Framing

Séguy prints are available in seven sizes from 21x30cm to 100x150cm, framed or unframed. All produced on 230gsm matte art paper with archival inks.

Who was Emile-Alain Séguy?

Emile-Alain Séguy (1877–1951) was a French artist and designer working in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco tradition. He is best known for his luxury pochoir-printed books of insect and butterfly illustration — particularly Papillons (1925) and Insectes (1929) — which combine scientific accuracy with extraordinary decorative invention. He was also a significant influence on French textile and wallpaper design of the early 20th century.

What is pochoir printing?

Pochoir is a stencil-based colour printing technique developed in France in the late 19th century and used extensively for luxury illustrated books and fashion plates in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Each colour is applied separately through a precisely cut stencil, allowing an intensity and accuracy of colour that lithography and other printing methods could not achieve. Séguy's Papillons is widely considered the finest example of pochoir printing.

What rooms suit Séguy prints?

Séguy prints are highly versatile and suit both traditional and contemporary interiors. The jewel-like colours work particularly well in living rooms and studies where rich colour is wanted. The butterfly and insect subject matter suits any room that has a natural history or botanical character. A group of Séguy plates in matching frames creates an extraordinary gallery wall.
