Hasui Kawase Exhibition Posters

The exhibition poster format presents art prints within the graphic design conventions of museum and gallery poster art — the work framed, titled, and attributed in a way that references the institutional context of great art. For Hasui Kawase's prints, this format adds a layer of cultural authority to already extraordinary artworks.

The Exhibition Poster Format

Exhibition posters combine the artwork itself with typographic framing — the artist's name, the work's title, and often the name of a fictional or referenced exhibition. The design convention signals that this is serious art, not decorative illustration — and for Kawase, who was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government and whose prints are held by the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and major institutions worldwide, the designation is entirely appropriate.

Kawase's Most Exhibition-Worthy Works

The exhibition poster format suits Kawase's most atmospheric and celebrated prints particularly well:

• Rain scenes — the extraordinary rain prints that are Kawase's most celebrated works.
• Snow landscapes — the quiet, still snow scenes that brought Kawase international recognition.
• Night scenes — moonlit temples and lantern-lit streets in the exhibition poster presentation.
