Who was Johann Friedrich Naumann?

Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780–1857) was a German ornithologist and natural history illustrator. He is best known for his Natural History of Birds of Germany (Naturgeschichte der Vögel Deutschlands), a 13-volume work published between 1820 and 1844 containing 456 hand-coloured bird illustration plates. It is widely considered the finest European bird illustration publication ever produced.

What birds are in the Naumann collection?

The Naumann plates cover all birds native to or passing through Germany — raptors (eagles, falcons, hawks, owls), songbirds, waders, waterfowl, woodland birds, and coastal and migratory species. The coverage is comprehensive across all European bird groups.

How do Naumann's bird prints compare to Audubon?

Both Naumann and Audubon are celebrated as the greatest bird illustrators of the 19th century — Naumann for European species, Audubon for American. Naumann's plates are more scientifically systematic and often show multiple specimens or life stages per plate. Audubon's are more dramatic and often show single birds in life-size format. Both are extraordinary; the choice depends on whether you want European or American species and which artistic sensibility appeals more.
