Vintage Botanical & Floral Prints

Botanical illustration has been one of the defining art forms in European culture since the 16th century — when the need to identify and classify the world's plants precisely drove artists to extraordinary levels of draughtsmanship and observation. The results are among the most beautiful artworks ever produced.

The Botanical Illustration Tradition

The finest botanical illustrators worked directly from living specimens, creating images that were simultaneously scientifically accurate and aesthetically sublime. The great botanical publications — from Maria Sibylla Merian's insect and plant illustrations in the 17th century through Pierre-Joseph Redouté's roses and lilies in the early 19th century — were luxury objects in their own time, and the illustrations within them remain among the most desirable art prints today.

This collection features work from this rich tradition, including Victorian flower plate illustration, hand-coloured botanical engravings, Japanese floral illustration, and Art Nouveau floral design.

Japanese Botanical Illustration

The Japanese botanical tradition produced some of the most striking floral illustration ever made — particularly the flower photographs and prints produced in the Meiji era. The Ogawa Kazumasa collection is particularly notable for its extraordinary colour fidelity and compositional elegance.

Why Vintage Botanical Prints Work in Interiors

Vintage botanical prints are universally flattering in interiors — they bring nature, history, and artisanal beauty together in a format that suits any room from kitchen to hallway to bedroom. The antique paper tones and hand-coloured quality create warmth that contemporary botanical photography often cannot match.

Sizes and Framing

Vintage botanical prints are available in seven sizes from 21x30cm to 100x150cm, framed or unframed. All produced on 230gsm matte art paper with archival inks.

What makes a botanical print "vintage"?

A vintage botanical print is a reproduction of historical plant illustration — typically from the 17th to early 20th centuries. The originals were produced by scientific illustrators working from living specimens for botanical publications, herbals, and encyclopaedias. They are characterised by precise detail, hand-coloured or colour-printed finishes, and an aged paper quality. Contemporary botanical illustration in the vintage style also exists — it replicates the techniques and aesthetic of historical illustration.

What is the difference between vintage botanical and contemporary botanical prints?

Vintage botanical prints are reproductions of historical illustrations — typically 17th to early 20th century. Contemporary botanical prints are new artworks made in modern times, though many reference the vintage illustration tradition. Vintage prints tend to have an antique paper tone and historical illustration style. Contemporary botanical prints are cleaner and more graphic. Both categories appear in the collection.

What rooms suit vintage botanical prints best?

Vintage botanical prints suit almost any room. In kitchens, herb and vegetable botanical prints are a natural fit. In bathrooms, delicate flower plates create a spa-like refinement. In bedrooms, floral illustration adds beauty without visual noise. In living rooms and hallways, large botanical prints make strong decorative statements. A series of matching botanical plates in a single frame style is one of the most classic and reliable gallery wall treatments.
