Vintage Flower Prints

Flower illustration has been central to European art since the Dutch Golden Age — when botanical accuracy and decorative beauty met in the extraordinary floral still lifes and botanical illustrations of the 17th and 18th centuries. The tradition continued through the great botanical publications of the 19th century and into Art Nouveau's sinuous floral design. This collection draws from the best of that tradition.

Victorian Flower Plate Illustration

Victorian botanical publications produced flower plates of extraordinary delicacy and precision — hand-coloured lithographs that captured the colour, texture, and botanical accuracy of each specimen with remarkable skill. These plates have a warm, slightly aged quality that no contemporary reproduction quite matches.

Art Nouveau Floral Design

Art Nouveau (1890s–1910s) made the flower its central motif — sinuous, stylised floral forms in flowing compositions that transformed botanical observation into pure decoration. The best Art Nouveau flower prints are simultaneously naturalistic and almost abstract.

Japanese Floral Illustration

The Japanese floral tradition — particularly the extraordinary Meiji-era work of Ogawa Kazumasa — produced floral illustration of a completely different character: spare, composed, and achieving beauty through careful selection rather than ornamental fullness.
