Kamisaka Sekka Japanese Prints

Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was one of Japan's greatest decorative artists — the master revivalist of the Rinpa school, who brought the extraordinary ornamental tradition of Korin, Sotatsu, and Kenzan into the 20th century. His woodblock prints and designs combine natural subject matter with the bold, decorative geometry that defines Rinpa at its best.

Who was Kamisaka Sekka?

Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was a Japanese artist and the leading figure of the Rinpa school revival in the Meiji and Taisho eras. He was born in Kyoto and spent his career as a designer and printmaker, working across lacquerware, textiles, ceramics, and woodblock prints. His Momoyogusa (A World of Things, 1909–1910) — a collection of 100 Rinpa-style designs — is considered the finest Rinpa publication of the modern period.

What is the Rinpa school?

Rinpa is a Japanese school of painting and decorative art that began in the early 17th century with Tawaraya Sotatsu and was continued by Ogata Korin (from whose name "Rinpa" derives), Nakamura Hochu, and others. It is characterised by bold simplification of natural forms, sophisticated use of flat colour and gold leaf, decorative patterning, and a deep sensitivity to negative space. Kamisaka Sekka was the most important Rinpa revival artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

What subjects does Kamisaka Sekka paint?

Sekka returns repeatedly to the natural world in the Rinpa tradition: flowers (iris, chrysanthemum, plum, peony), waves, mountains, birds, butterflies, pine, and the seasonal subjects central to Japanese aesthetic culture. He also produced designs based on classical Japanese literature and court culture. All subjects are rendered with the bold, decorative simplification characteristic of Rinpa.
