Who was Hiroshi Yoshida?

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print artist, and one of the leading figures of the shin-hanga (new print) movement. Trained in Western oil painting, he later devoted himself to woodblock printmaking, combining Western perspective and colour theory with traditional Japanese printmaking techniques to create landscapes of extraordinary depth and beauty. He is particularly celebrated for his cherry blossom, bridge, and mountain prints.

What is the difference between Yoshida and Kawase Hasui?

Both Yoshida and Kawase Hasui were leading shin-hanga artists, but their sensibilities differed significantly. Hasui focused on the quiet, atmospheric moments of Japanese life — rain, snow, moonlight, the contemplative pause. Yoshida sought the grand landscape: grand spatial depth, dramatic mountain and architectural subjects, and a Western-influenced approach to perspective and light. Both are extraordinary artists; the choice between them is largely one of temperament.

What Yoshida prints are most popular?

Yoshida's cherry blossom prints are among his most celebrated and sought-after works. His bridge prints (particularly the Kintaikyo bridge series) and mountain landscape prints are also highly popular. His India series — produced during his extensive travels — is particularly prized for its unusual subject matter.
