Ogawa Kazumasa (1860–1929) was one of the great figures of Meiji-era Japanese photography and printing. His colour collotype reproductions of Japanese flowers and subjects, produced in the 1890s and early 1900s, represent some of the finest printed works of the period — combining photographic accuracy with colour reproduction of extraordinary fidelity.

The Ogawa Kazumasa Process

Ogawa used the collotype printing process — a photo-mechanical technique that could reproduce photographic images in continuous tone — combined with hand-applied colour to achieve results of remarkable precision. His flower publications, including Flowers of Japan and Selected Flowers of Japan (1895–1896), used original photographs of cut flowers arranged against neutral grounds and reproduced with a clarity and colour accuracy that set a new standard for printed flower illustration.
